Write for us

Open News Spotlight welcomes considered proposals that help readers understand how news is sourced, presented and followed. Send proposals through the Contact page; unsolicited material is reviewed, but publication is not guaranteed.

What we welcome

Pitch original explainers on sources, claims, context, news formats or reading habits. A strong contribution teaches a transferable skill through a specific question, defines any necessary terms and gives readers a clear way to apply the idea.

Make the pitch specific

Include a working title, the central question, the intended reader and a short account of the piece's main point. Say what material or examples would support it, and identify any uncertainty or limits. Keep the proposal focused enough that its subject and value are easy to assess.

Standards and submission

We consider clear, original work that separates evidence from interpretation and avoids unsupported claims. Disclose relevant interests or commercial ties. Send a proposal through the Contact page using the editorial question option; do not send confidential material or assume that a pitch has been accepted until we respond.

Our point of view

A headline is a starting point, not the whole story.

We look for the source, the scope of each claim and the details that can change its meaning. Readers should be able to see what is known and what remains open.
